When asked by a writer why she did not draw “beautiful things” Käthe responded, “For me the proletariat was beautiful. The outward appearance of typical workers stimulated me to portray them. Only later when, through closer contact, I really learned to know the misery and poverty of the workers did there arise [in me] a feeling of obligation - to serve them by means of my art.” (Klein & Klein, p.156)
