Fouques was born in New Caledonia in 1892. He is most noted for his post-impressionist work with a style reminiscent of the late 19th century. His scenes are tranquil, his compositions uncluttered, with light and atmosphere bathing his landscapes and seascapes. In 1933 Fouques participated in an exhibition entitled "Montmartre aux Artistes" and in 1939 he showed his work at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. In the mid 1940s he became a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, as well as of the Salon d'Hiver in Paris. Fouques often painted the regions of Normandy and Brittany evoking the moods of rural France... in this plen-air work he portrayed the shellfish fishermen of Normandy. Fouques spent most of his life painting yet seldom promoted the sale of his work. He died in 1954.
